Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?
Yes, advance purchase is highly recommended. Tours often sell out so we suggest purchasing your tickets early to guarantee your desired tour day. You can buy your tickets either online or by phone with a Visa, MasterCard or American Express. Any remaining tickets will be sold on the day of the tour at the Newport Visitor Center beginning at 9am.
If a tour is sold out, can I get on a waiting list?
There is not a waiting list for sold out tours so be sure to book well in advance.
What happens if it rains?
The tour runs regardless of weather. Please dress according to the weather forecast.
Is the tour narrated?
Yes, your tour guide will narrate the tour and is happy to answer any further questions.
What is the difference between the three tour options?
All three tours include the 1½ narrated trolley tour by Historic Tours of Newport. Guests who select Tour #2 or Tour #3 will also receive entrance to one or two mansions of their choice to explore on their own after the narrated tour is complete. Transportation is provided to and from all mansions.
What will we see on the tour?
We will drive along the Ten Mile Ocean Drive, view mansions along Bellevue Avenue and see the beautiful sights and buildings of Newport.
Is the tour suitable for children? What type of ticket should I purchase?
We generally don't recommend the tour for young children since the tour is focused on history and some children have a limited attention span. But parents, who know their children best, should consider whether the tour is appropriate for their child before booking. We do offer a reduced rate for children 5-17 years old and children under the age of 5 can attend for free but must sit in a parent's lap. If they would like their own seat, a child ticket needs to be purchased.
What kind of bus will we be traveling in? Is it climate controlled?
We will be traveling in a 24 passenger Trolley that is climate controlled for your comfort.
Is there assigned seating on the bus?
Seating is first come, first serve. Please arrive early to ensure that your group can sit together.
How much walking is involved? Do we get off the bus during the tour?
On Tour #1, we stay on the bus for most of the 1½ hour tour except for a brief stop to see Fort Adams. On Tour #2 & Tour #3 guests will get dropped off at the mansion of their choice will be picked up after an hour and a half.
How should I dress for the tour? What should I wear?
Please dress comfortably and we suggest looking at the weather forecast especially for those guests who select Tour #2 or #3 where guests will be getting off the Trolley at the mansions.
Do we need to let you know in advance what mansion(s) we would like to visit?
Advance notice of which mansion you would like to visit is not necessary. Your tour guide will collect this information at the start of the tour and will drop you off at your desired mansion.
How much time should we alot to visit a mansion?
We would recommend spending about an 1½ hours at each mansion. Therefore, if you are selection Tour #2, it is best to allow for 3 hours for the entire experience and for Tour #3, its best to allow for 4½ hours for the entire experience.
Is there a guided tour of the mansion(s)?
Admission to the mansions is included when you purchase Tour #2 or Tour #3. Each mansion offers either a guided tour or an audio tour.
Where does the tour end?
Those booked for Tour #1 will be dropped back at the Visitor Center. For those booked for Tour #2 or Tour #3, you will be dropped off at the first mansion you choose and a transportation will come back to take you to the second mansion or back to the Visitors Center.
Can I leave my belongings on the bus if we get off? May I bring luggage on the bus?
There is very limited storage space available on the bus and we cannot accommodate large pieces of luggage. Please also keep in mind that we may make a stop of up to 10-15 minutes where we will be leaving the bus. While you can leave your belongings on the bus during this time, please note that Historic Tours of Newport is not responsible for things left on the bus.
Will we be able to purchase food or drinks during the tour? Can I bring my own food or drinks?
While food and drinks are not available for purchase during the tour, you can bring a snack or beverage on the bus. We just ask that you remain thoughtful of other guests and remove any trash from the trolley.
Will restrooms be available during the tour?
There is a bathroom at the Visitor Center, which we suggest visiting before the tour begins. For guests selecting one of the optional mansion visits, there are restrooms available at the mansions.
Are cameras allowed on the tour?
Yes! There is so much to see during the tour and it would be absolutely worth it to bring a camera to capture the beauty of Newport.
Will local residents enjoy the tour?
Absolutely! Whether you are looking for a way entertain out-of-town guests, have a team-building exercise or just to learn more about the wonderful city you live in, this is the tour for you! You’ll be surprised how much you will learn on the tour from our comfortable bus.
Is there parking near the starting location?
There is a pay parking lot at the Visitor Center and 30 minutes of free parking is available with validation. In addition, there is a public parking garage located adjacent to the Visitor Center.
Are tours only available in English?
Yes, at the moment we can only offer tours in English. If you are looking to arrange a private tour with an interpreter, please contact us at 401-855-1942 to discuss arrangements.
Is the bus wheelchair and stroller accessible?
Our vehicle does not have a wheelchair lift but we can usually accommodate guests if they can manage to get on and off the bus and walk short distances. There is not much storage space on the bus, therefore wheelchairs and strollers are only permitted if they can be collapsed and stored in the back of the bus. Please note that some mansions do not allow strollers. If you have any questions about whether this tour is appropriate for someone with limited mobility, please contact us at 401-855-1942 directly.
Will we be able to purchase gifts on the tour? Can we shop during the tour?
While we will be point out some local hotspots for shopping, we ask that you refrain from shopping during the tour. It is important that we stay on time, so take note of the shops you would like to return to after the tour. For those who select the optional mansion tours, each mansion does have a gift shop.
Are gratuities included?
Gratuities are not included in the ticket price. While note required, gratuities are accepted and appreciated by the tour guides. (15% is standard for a job well done.)
Are pets allowed on the tour?
We are not able to accommodate pets on the tour.
Is smoking allowed on the tour?
Smoking is not permitted during the tour.
